Community service is a great way for students to learn and grow by actively participating in organized service experiences that successfully meet the needs of the greater community. Participating in community service provides students with opportunities through which they can reach out to the surrounding area and work to fight for social causes.
There are several reasons why students should consider taking part in community service. These include improving their leadership skills, seeing the impact their work has on their community, learning about themselves and building their resumes.
Alternative Spring Break
Each year, Curry students travel to different locations to spend their Spring Break participating in the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge. These service trips provide students with a wonderful opportunity to improve their leadership skills; to affect a global cause by advocating on behalf of poverty housing issues and to help provide a simple, decent, affordable place to live for people in need. Past trips have been to New York, Delaware and Pennsylvania. Theses students have also participated in local builds on weekends throughout the semester, as well.
Curry Cares
Curry Cares is a student-run community service organization dedicated to giving back to the community and to providing Curry students, staff and faculty members with opportunities to volunteer both on and off campus. Curry Cares members also create awareness about the importance of participating in volunteer efforts and helping those who are in need. Past community service projects have included trips to Fuller Village, a local independent senior citizen housing community; campaigns to benefit Cradles to Crayons; participation in local builds for the South Shore Habitat for Humanity; and an on-campus Senior Citizen Prom.
Whether through involvement in a club, participation in community service projects, or work as an Orientation Leader, there are many ways for you to develop your leadership skills on campus. The Student Activities Office runs leadership trainings and workshops for students and also offers the ELITE program for Emerging Student Leaders.
