Business Management at Curry College, featuring Dr. Ishani Tewari

Economist Focused on Emerging Markets

Dr. Ishani Tewari has always pondered why some countries are richer than others are and why productivity is higher in some parts of the world. Questions such as these sparked Dr. Tewari's interest in economics.

"Economics is the study of people, households, government, and businesses and how each makes choices they hope will deliver the biggest benefit given the constraints they face."

Born in India, Tewari believes effective policy can reduce disparities around the globe. Her current research focuses on the development and economic growth in emerging markets such as India and China. One of her recent studies explored how Chinese women were able to reallocate their time and increasingly work outside the home after purchasing appliances such as fridges and washing machines for the first time.

In addition to her research, Tewari often uses case studies and current events to encourage her students to interpret economic ideas and how they are used in the real world.

"My hope is students see economics not just in the classroom, but they start recognizing that it's a natural and important driver of the choices they make as individuals, future managers, and as citizens."

The Business Management curriculum exposes students to a variety of industries including marketing, finance, human resources, information systems, and more. Internships are also an important component of the program. Tewari collaborates with the College's Center for Career Development to teach students seeking internships the art of resume development, networking, and conducting interviews.

"Our students have found great internships at high-profile companies such as Enterprise and CVS Health. Being on a campus that is just miles from downtown Boston is also beneficial because students have access to small, medium and large businesses."

Recently, the College launched a 5-year MBA program, an accelerated dual-degree option that lets students earn both a bachelor's and master's degree in just five years rather than the traditional six.

"We want to give our students a competitive edge in the job market and help them succeed based on the market's demands."
