Professor Guides Students in Cancer Cell Research

As a seasoned scientist with degrees from MIT and Harvard Medical School, Curry Biology professor Dr. Jessica Fry feels right at home in a laboratory. She loves helping students feel that way too, guiding them through hands-on lab work that brings academic concepts to life.

Dr. Fry recently began instructing Biology majors in cancer cell research, for example, teaching them to observe microscopic shifts in behavior.

“We look at changing proteins within the cell lines, and how that affects their migration and growth in cancer models,” she says.

Dr. Fry calls her work at Curry a return to her roots, as her graduate research focused on the effects of matrix remodeling protein ADAM-9 isoforms on breast cancer cell migration. While that might sound intimidating to the typical undergraduate, Dr. Fry's warm demeanor and passion for teaching make her exceptionally approachable. Indeed, she says she loves helping students of all levels grasp concepts both simple and complex.

“My favorite part about teaching at Curry is the students – the access we have to them and the fact that they aren’t afraid to come to us [for help],” she says. “We don’t have to just plow through the material – if the students really aren’t understanding something, we can go back and rehash something.”

Dr. Fry says whenever she can help a student succeed, she feels enormously proud.
