Dr. O'Neil earned her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University (1995), her MA in Sociology (2000) and Ph.D. in Sociology (2005) from Boston College. She teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate level in Sociology and Criminal Justice.
Areas of academic interest include: race, class and gender inequality, deviance and social control, gender studies, justice studies, media images and inequality, social theory and criminology
Dr. O'Neil focused her most recent research on environmental justice, studying specifically the unjust burden of hazardous waste sites on poor communities and communities of color. Although her research focused on environmental justice, Sandra is a generalist, interested in broader studies of justice and inequality. Future research prospects include images of crime depiction and the effects on gender and race inequality.
She is also the Co-Chair for the Millis Conservation Commission in Millis, Massachusetts. Some of the courses you may find her teaching: Social Problems, Perspectives on Society and Culture, Images and Power, and Women's Studies.
