Business Management Professor Sheena Murray recently presented research at the Lafayette College Economics Department, on how broadband and cell phone access have affected American marriages.
Because of increasingly widespread use of social media, chat rooms, and dating applications, the marriage market's "search costs" have lowered, posits Dr. Murray. Both single and married people can now more easily find information about potential partners.
Her research indicates that increased internet access has decreased marriage rates and increased divorce rates in rural counties. In large metropolitan areas, however, internet access has had the opposite effect.
